Ben on starting block for Brighton Marathon

14 April 2010

Ben and Alex ready for the big runTwo Brighton & Hove Green Councillors are taking part in this Sunday's Brighton Marathon and hoping to support good causes through sponsorship.

Councillor Alex Phillips, who represents Goldsmid ward, is running to raise money for Rise, formerly the Women's Refuge Project. Rise provides support for women, children and young people living with the effects of domestic violence.

Queen's Park Councillor Ben Duncan and Parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown is running in support of the the Brighton Unemployed Families' Centre Food Project.

Based in central Brighton, the project offers healthy, vegan, hot food to unemployed families, and is run almost entirely by volunteers - many of whom are themselves unemployed and developing some of the skills and confidence needed to help them back to work.

Ben is also the local Green Party spokesperson on Sport.

He said: "Greens welcome the Marathon as an exciting addition to the sporting calendar in Brighton & Hove, which has really fired people's imagination since it was announced last year.

"It looks set to be a fantastic day, for participants and visitors alike, and a great boost for the city's economy and profile."

Alex added: "The Marathon also presents a superb opportunity to raise awareness about the charities Ben and I are running in aid of.

"The Brighton Unemployed Families' Centre provides a unique service in Brighton & Hove, while Rise continues the work of the Women's Refuge in supporting women and children whose lives are blighted by domestic violence.

"Ben and I are proud to support these fine organisations and the valuable work they carry out in our city."
