Polls due to open

06 May 2010

Just 10 minutes to go until the polling stations open for what may well be the most important general election in a generation.

No-one really seems to know what's likely to happen: the polls have been volatile (where they've happened), as many as 40 per cent of voters are reported to be undecided, and the media is being careful not to repeat the mistake of 1992 (when it got the predictions all wrong) by 'calling' it one way or another.

Obviously I have no idea how things will pan out either - but I do know this: electing a hung parliament, with a few Green Party MPs to fight for fairness, equality and sustainability, is the best chance we've had in years to deliver real change.

I hope voters will do just that - that means voting Green here in Brighton Kemptown.

But whatever happens I hope two other things: that turnout is high (especially the first time voters, and that people use their votes positively, for the candidate they most want to win, not against the candidate they'd most like to lose.

We urgently need electoral reform so that every vote counts - and no-one has to resort to the cycnicsm of tactical voting.

If I'm elected, I'll fight for that change.

Good luck making your mind up - and thank you to everyone for all the kind words and help I've been offered throughout the campaign.
